By the time that Donald Trump returned to the White House on January 20 of this year, he had promised repeatedly to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours. That was two months ago, and there’s still no end in sight for the Ukraine war. This week, Trump appeared to make some small progress in his purported pursuit of peace when he spoke to Vladimir Putin by telephone. In their conversation, the two Presidents reportedly agreed to a 30-day cessation of attacks on energy infrastructure. Yet, within a day of the Trump-Putin call, Russia revealed that Ukraine had violated the ceasefire by attacking an oil depot in Russia. Meanwhile, on Trump's watch, Israel's genocidal regime has obliterated the ceasefire in Gaza and the U.S. military has resumed barbaric attacks on the people of Yemen. On March 21, 2025, Dimitri Lascaris spoke with John Helmer about the ability and willingness of the Trump administration to do what is necessary to bring these devastating wars to an end. Helmer is the longest continuously serving foreign correspondent in Russia, and the only Western journalist to direct his own bureau, independent of national or commercial ties. Born and educated in Australia, then at Harvard University, John has also been a professor of political science, sociology and journalism and an adviser to governments, including Greece and Australia. He has also published several books on military and political topics. His latest book is titled “Long live Novichok, the British Poison which fooled the world”.
