Is Central Africa heading for another devastating war? Tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have reached a critical point, and fears are growing that the two countries are on the brink of all-out war. In late January 2025, the M23 rebel group – widely believed to be backed by Rwanda – launched a major offensive, capturing key areas in eastern Congo, including parts of North Kivu province. The escalation forced hundreds of thousands to flee, and there are reports of fierce fighting between M23 and Congolese government troops. As the UN calls for Rwanda's withdrawal and international pressure grows, Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi has said that war may be unavoidable if Rwanda does not end its involvement.

This crisis has deep historical roots, stemming from the aftermath of the 1994 Rwandan genocide and decades of instability in eastern Congo. Rwanda argues that its actions are aimed at neutralising Hutu militant groups, particularly the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (DFLR), which it considers a direct threat to its security. However, many analysts suspect that Rwanda's intervention may also be driven by economic and territorial ambitions, as reports suggest that Rwanda has been illegally profiting from Congo's vast mineral wealth. While regional and global powers, including South Africa, the United States, and the UN, are trying to mediate, the risk of a protracted and devastating conflict remains high. Could this be Africa's next great war, or is there still hope for a diplomatic solution?

Secession and State Formation: What Everyone Needs to Know

M23, a Rwanda-backed armed rebel group, are fighting in the Democratic Republic of the Congo - and they’re gaining ground. [Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe] They made headline news early in January when they took the largest city in the east, Goma. Now, reports say their troops have entered the second-largest city in the region, Bukavu. M23 have formed an alliance with other groups who say their ultimate goal is to topple the DRC’s President Felix Tshisekedi and rule the country. For some, that’s cause for celebration. For others, it’s yet another brutal phase in a devastating conflict that has spanned decades. The group says it is fighting to defend the rights of the Tutsi ethnic group - who were brutally slaughtered in the Rwandan genocide of 1994. But the Congolese government says M23 is the puppet army of its neighbour and enemy Rwanda, sent to plunder the country’s mineral wealth. We’re going to tell you what’s really driving today's conflict between M23 and the Congolese army and how the outcome of the war could have implications for millions of people.
