President Traore Confronts African Union Over DRC Security Crisis

Like the Sahel region, the Democratic Republic of Congo has been experiencing severe insecurity for decades. The East African country alone has more than 100 different armed groups causing chaos left right, and center. Just last week, it was reported that the M23 rebel group, one of the most dangerous groups in the country, had taken over Goma, a city in the DRC. The situation has escalated with the DRC government accusing Rwanda of backing the rebel group. Throughout all this, the African Union has not made any tangible efforts to deal with the crisis. This is why President Traore has sent a strong message to the African Union, blasting it over its inability to deal with any security crisis in the country. But what exactly did President Traore say? Let’s find out. In an interview, Traore expressed his disappointment with how the African Union, an organization created to ensure African Unity, has been dealing with the crisis in the DRC. He said “Children of Congo have been dying for years. Several other conflicts including the one in Sudan have existed in the continents. We would have liked to see the African Union generate the strength and strategies necessary to support its state so that it could find peace. We will not even talk about us in the Sahel region. For nearly ten years, the Sahel has been the scene of international terrorism. But we see no support from these organizations to find a solution”. Traore’s words ring true. Think about it. All across the continents, there are countries that have not found stability since Independence. Others have experienced severe insecurity for decades. It's either there is a civil war with one group fighting the government or it's terrorism. These countries include Malo, Niger, Burkina Faso, the DRC, the Central African Republic, Sudan and Libya. Even those countries that have a sense of stability and security such as Nigeria, Ghana, and Togo, still deal with insecurity caused by terrorists.
