Israel's war in the Gaza Strip is being met with vehement criticism worldwide. The New York Times points out in a recent commentary that the Israeli government's policies will have dire consequences for Jews worldwide.
‘Israelis, Jews in the diaspora and friends of Israel around the world must understand that the way Israel is waging war in the Gaza Strip today is laying the groundwork for a fundamental reshaping of perceptions of Israel and Jews around the world,’ writes the newspaper's foreign affairs columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner Thomas L. Friedman.
‘It will not end well,’ Friedman, who is himself Jewish, continues, warning: ‘Police cars and private security guards outside synagogues and Jewish institutions are becoming increasingly normal; Israel is no longer seen by Jews as a safe haven from anti-Semitism, but as its new source.’
Zionism didn’t just dispossess Palestinians, it also helped destroy centuries-old Jewish communities across the Arab world. Historian Avi Shlaim, born in Baghdad and now a leading voice in exposing Zionist mythology, joins Dispatches to reveal how Israel used false flag terror attacks, including Mossad-led bombings in Iraq, to force Arab Jews to flee. In this wide-ranging conversation with Rania Khalek, Shlaim connects the founding violence of the Israeli state to its ongoing genocide in Gaza, challenges the myths of Israeli “democracy,” and says that Zionism has not only targeted Palestinians, but also betrayed Arab Jews and Jews around the world.
