From TFF Director Jan ObergLund, Sweden - August 15, 2025 Dear friend,Understandably, the Trump-Putin meeting later today in Anchorage gets a lot of attention. But does it strike you just how underdeveloped the global conflict-resolution and peacemaking system is when the world has to hold its breath at two old men meeting who may or may not be in the mood to make a deal - a deal that may be determining for the lives - or deaths - of hundreds of millions of innocent citizens? As if dealmaking were peacemaking! (..) Parties to a conflict can never serve as mediators and must remain impartial in investigating the paths to the best solution for all parties. That is both a creative science and an art. Sorry to say so, but neither Putin nor Trump is a scientist, an artist, or a peace creative. Anchorage defies social laws and every concept of peacemaking. Where are the UN, OSCE, civil society organisations and individuals with mediation experience? Where are neutral countries that could mediate? What happened to normal intelligence, empathy, common security, slightly complex thinking and diplomacy that are all required to make real peace? Where is the discussion about new global institutions for handling conflicts intelligently? The answer is as straightforward as it is frightening: Militarist kakistocracy has thrown them all out of the window. Anyone can start a fight in a bar, but anyone can not stop the fight and make reconciliation and peace. We must educate ourselves in handling conflicts intelligently - that is, with as little violence as possible - make peace, and set our own agendas while denying theirs. That is the only way to real peace, and it stands in stark contrast to Trump/Putin’s fake Western peace. What’s new - and old - goodies this time? I happily repeat: There are always some new educational videos in our growing Video Collections on Substack. Videos are an easy way to learn if you are not enthusiastic about reading longer texts. Also, we are going to use video much more in the future. Here is the new bouquet of reports, analyses, and debate articles. You can browse them all in one go at The Transnational, TFF on Substack, and Jan Oberg’s blog. Remember that you may freely share anything we publish - with due reference.
