Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman's book Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media is a must read book for any Communication Studies student. It provides a model that predicts the type of stories that will be reported in the Western mass media. The model doesn't try to argue that the media produces stories that are convincing. It only argues that the stories that make the news serve the interests of the rich and powerful that own the news. More importantly, this model is a tool that we can all use today to understand why we see certain stories and why other stories are excluded from the news media.
